About Backwater Valve Installation

A backwater valve is a type of backflow prevention device that is connected to a drain pipe (or drain pipes) located inside your home. When the valve gate is open, it allows outbound wastewater to flow freely out of your home. When the gate is closed, it prevents water backflow from re-entering your home through the basement, toilets, sinks, showers, etc. Under normal conditions, with the normal daily use of your home plumbing fixtures, backflow shouldn’t occur. However, when the city’s sewer system becomes overburdened by heavy rainfall, or it isn’t functioning properly due to a blockage in the sewer line, sewer backup can occur. If you live in St. Louis —or any area where rain storms and flash flooding are common —your home may be at risk for sewer backup and/or basement flooding.

A backwater valve helps to ensure that wastewater flows in the right direction —even during times when the sewer lines are overburdened.

Note of Caution…

Homeowners: You will need to let a sewer cable technician know that a backwater valve is present. This is because if the technician tries to run a snake from outside the house into the house, it will hit the valve and may damage it.
