What Is a Plumbing Apprenticeship Like?

By August 3, 2018Plumbing Career

A plumbing apprenticeship lasts 5 years and provides you with valuable on-the-job training. It is the first step in your plumbing career after completing your technical education. As an apprentice, you will gain hands-on skills and in-depth industry knowledge—all while earning a paycheck! Completing a plumbing apprenticeship with a reputable contractor will put you ahead of the crowd and set you up for a long-lasting, successful career.

Starting a Plumbing Apprenticeship

After finishing a plumbing certificate program at a high-quality technical school, like Ranken Technical College in St. Louis, you’ll be qualified to begin a plumbing apprenticeship. The apprenticeship is not something that is handed to you. You’ll have to apply for it like any other job. Contact a local plumbing contractor, like Tony LaMartina Plumbing Company, and ask how to apply.

What’s It Like to Work as an Apprentice?

As an apprentice, you’ll work side by side with either a Journeyman or Master Plumber, who will serve as your mentor and supervisor. Apprentice Plumbers at Tony LaMartina Plumbing Company start off making $15 per hour and gradually move up to nearly $34 per hour. By the end of your 5-year plumbing apprenticeship, you will have all the knowledge and skills you need to pass your licensing exam and become a licensed Journeyman Plumber.

Mike Dryden, General Foreman and Lead Estimator here at TLPC, began his apprenticeship under Tony LaMartina in 1996 and went on to become a licensed Master Plumber in 2011. “Doing my apprenticeship under Tony was an invaluable learning experience,” says Dryden. “It got me off to a great start in my career.”
